Daily Alert and Live Q&A – Wednesday 27th April 2022: Equities try, again, to rally

Good evening.

Yesterday was strongly risk-off as Russia cut off gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria and Google missed its profit and sales targets. Yes, those two issues are roughly the same in the mind of a trader. My S&P500 was blown out of the water for a loss of 2 percent.

Today, as of 6pm BST, sentiment is moderately risk-on. I am looking at equities recovering, the EURUSD hitting a 5-year low based on fundamentals that I cannot see changing any time soon, and the JPY and commodity currencies behaving as we like to see, with their inverse correlation. Maybe I can grab one, just one, winning trade this month.

We also had a Live Q&A where I discussed the new sentiment gauge and trade finder spreadsheet (13mins 30secs) and we went in-depth on three important issues:

Can you please explain why the sentiment calculator sometimes doesn’t work, with respect to equities and the bond yield, e.g. when we are risk-on and equities are going up, the US 10-Year yield is going down, meaning bond prices are rising, which would indicate risk-off? It seems contradictory.

Why do the JPY and commodity currencies move in different directions?
Why do they sometimes not?

Why do the JPY and commodity currencies move in different directions?
Why do they sometimes not?

We’ll be back tomorrow, late afternoon. Have a good evening.
